Reads, Rhythms, and Lifesavers
Dear Rule-Breakers,
You are amazing. Have I told you that lately? Thanks for being here. If you’re new to this space, this is a quarterly edition of Rule-Breaking News in which I share what I’ve been reading, what I’ve been listening to, and what I’ve been otherwise enjoying these days. I prefer this space to be more of a conversation, so I’d love to hear from YOU, too.
What I’ve Been Reading:
How to Walk Into a Room by Emily P. Freeman
Y’all know I’m a pretty big fan of Emily already, and this book did not disappoint. It was inspiring and validating. I only wish this resource would have been available a few years ago. Still, it’s a choice if you’re trying to discern if you should stay where you are or make a move. I find Emily’s writing to be gentle and unassuming. She provides such a safe space for those of us in the middle of faith transitions, and I think anyone would benefit from reading her work who struggles with decision-making—religious or not.
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
I know I’m a recovering rule-follower, but I am a rebel at heart. When books, movies, or music are “trendy,” I have to fight the urge to immediately write them off just because they’re popular. However, I gave this bestseller a try, and I am so glad I did! The writing was easy to follow while also deep. It is surprisingly relatable and chock full of important lessons for all of us people-pleasers. It is a beautifully told memoir. Just prepare yourself if you read it. It might mess with some parts of your childhood especially if you watched a lot of Nickelodeon. Still, so good. Highly recommend.
The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England by Brandon Sanderson
If you don’t know this author, he typically writes epic fantasies in series format. Keeping up with a fantasy series can feel overwhelming, even though I love a good fantasy story. However, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, is a stand-alone tale that I am thoroughly enjoying. I also have read Tress of the Emerald Sea, another stand-alone fantasy novel that is also by Brandon Sanderson, and I have enjoyed both immensely, especially Tress. Her character is so lovable, and who doesn’t love a good story in which the woman is the hero of her own story! I recommend both if you like a good, witty and cleverly told fantasy. Great one for audio format!
Rhythms:
“Stupid Big Teeth” by EMMY
This one was an unexpected favorite, but it resonates deeply with me; I think it will resonate with you as well. As we evolve and grow, it’s difficult to maintain some relationships. It becomes more and more difficult to relate to someone who isn’t growing themselves. My favorite line is “I've been working on me, but it ain't working on you,” and that pretty much sums up the theme of this song that also happens to have a pretty fun and free rhythm and melody.
“Coming Home Song” by Sammy Rae and the Friends
I know, I know. I have already recommended Sammy Rae to you, probably on multiple occasions. But they are JUST SO GOOD! I got to see this incredible group of musicians live a couple of months ago. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended! This being one of their newer songs, I was pleasantly surprised and awe-inspired by the crowd’s reaction to it. The highlight of the concert was when the crowd all joined to sing the refrain together. This one is all about coming home to yourself which is a large part of what we’re doing here—learning to be our own home.
“Fall Into Place” by Couch
This is yet another band I discovered while listening to the recommended radio station for Lawrence fans, and I LOVE this song. Decision-making can be so difficult. When we are presented with new and better opportunities, it can be terrifying to take the leap. It is interesting to me how we struggle to just let the good things happen to us, to let it all fall into place. That’s what this song speaks to me—a reminder that it is okay to embrace the opportunities we are presented with.
Lifesavers:
Surprise parties and visits from friends:
I celebrated my fortieth birthday in April, and my husband and several friends surprised me with a whole day of surprises. I had no idea many of them were coming to visit, but I felt so loved and well-celebrated. I’m proud of my 40 years. I finally feel like I love and even like myself, and it felt so good to be reminded that I am also loved and liked by others, too.
Watching my kiddo practice her dance moves for recital:
One of the most beautiful parts of parenting is watching your kiddo become their own person with their own unique personality. My kiddo decided a few months ago that she wanted to try hip-hop, and she has been dancing around the house ever since! I don’t fancy myself a “dance mom,” but she’s so excited about her recital, and I am excited for her. She has worked so hard—for HER—no one else. And I am LOVING watching her embrace this new fountain of joy.
Taking Things One Week at a Time
I know I’m not the only one who looks around their house, wishing it could be more clean or organized. It makes me feel so overwhelmed at times that I can’t even do one thing. I’ve decided to try and complete one small project—deep cleaning or organizing—each week to help with this overwhelm. It has been an incredibly helpful shift. We do not have to do it all in one day.
Allowing myself to NOT post on social media:
I’ve been in a toxic relationship. With social media.
As a writer, I’m supposed to be keeping a schedule. I’m supposed to be consistent. I’m supposed to be sharing all the things on social media to grow my name and brand. I’m supposed to. I should. But I just can’t right now. There are shifting priorities, and more importantly, I just don’t want to. I’m in a season where there are more important things. I am enjoying the extra margin and lack of need to be constantly scrolling, waiting for comments and likes. Maybe someday I’ll be back to it, but for now, I’m enjoying the mental and emotional space of not having to post.
I have, however, been scrolling a bit. Here are a few things that I’ve gathered to share with you:
Love this update and you. Happy Birthday gorgeous lady! So glad you felt so loved and celebrated. 🎉 Can’t wait to check out the songs and books. Almost done with Emily’s new book and it is 🔥! Proud of all you do and cheering you on always. 💜
